Pharmacy leadership

Coventry obesity project is an excellent example

From Mr I. G. Simpson, FRPharmS

I was pleased to see the publicity given to the Coventry obesity project in Matthew Wright’s article (PJ, 20 January, p69). This project is an excellent example of pharmacy leadership at local level drawing in support from a wide range of people, organisations and companies to tackle a local public health issue.

A chance meeting between UniChem’s Richard Balcon and myself led to an invitation to attend the inaugural evening meeting of all involved in the project, and I was impressed by the enthusiasm of the pharmacists who had volunteered to take part, the support of the primary care trust, including the attendance of its chief executive, and the involvement of the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee and a range of suppliers of monitoring equipment, as well as the work of UniChem’s professional services team. I immediately offered the support of the College of Pharmacy Practice and we are pleased to be involved in three ways:

• By accrediting the training programme against the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s continuing professional development competency framework

• By providing, with financial support from UniChem, an electronic, password-protected discussion forum so that the pharmacists taking part in the project can exchange views and queries, and the PCT and the college can provide information to them

• By inviting all pharmacists in the project to join the college’s public health interest group free of charge, again including access to a password-protected discussion forum which is used as a source of information by the members

John Goes, Laurence Tressler and the UniChem professional services team are to be congratulated on getting the project to the launch stage and we look forward to working with them and the Coventry pharmacists to ensure its success.

Ian Simpson
Chief Executive
College of Pharmacy Practice
