Staff asked to work for free

Staff at Pembury Hospital in Kent have been asked to work extra hours for nothing in an attempt to help the trust balance its books.

A spokeswoman for Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust, which runs the hospital, said that she was not aware that any pharmacy staff had volunteered to do extra work for no pay.

The idea of free working came from a staff suggestion scheme aimed at generating ideas to help the trust balance its books. Early in 2006–07 the trust reported a financial deficit of over £16m and announced 300 job cuts.
