Transdermal Alzheimer's vaccine

Vaccination with a transdermal beta-amyloid peptide against Alzheimer's disease has shown positive results in animal studies. Researchers tested the vaccine in transgenic mice, designed to develop amyloid plaques at eight months of age.

The plaques were cleared from the brains of treated mice, which showed no signs of aseptic meningoencephalitis —a serious side effect observed in clinical studies of an intraperitoneal vaccine (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences 2007;104:2507).
