Superdrug expands mole clinics nationally

Superdrug is to launch mole clinics in 20 stores across Great Britain this year.

The new service, which has been piloted in three central London stores, is to be expanded in May to coincide with Sun Awareness Week, which starts on 7 May. In the first phase, Superdrug will employ 15 specialist nurses to run the clinics.

The clinics will operate as a franchise of the MOLE clinic, a private company based in London’s Harley Street.

Nurse specialists will offer mole checks, priced from £45 for a single mole plus £15 for each additional mole, using a digital dermoscopy technique that is able to examine beneath the surface of a mole.

Any suspect cases will be referred to secondary care in accordance with guidelines published by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence and the British Association of Dermatologists.

Superdrug’s superintendent pharmacist, Martin Crisp, said: “Our trial with mole clinics in three stores has proved an immediate success.”

He added that the pilots had resulted in a couple of cases of early melanoma being identified.
