Retail pharmacy

A professional light?

From Mr M. W. S. Holden, MRPharmS

Despite all the efforts to raise the profile of our profession I note that the PJ has reverted to using the title of “retail pharmacy” for the arm of the profession which most of us now refer to as “community pharmacy”. Locally we describe our pharmacies as practices, and not stores, branches or shops; this is all part of the strategy to integrate community pharmacy into the primary health care team. If we cannot look at ourselves in a professional light, how can we expect other professions and commissioners to do so? Could I ask the editor to reconsider the title used for this section ?

Michael Holden
Chief Officer
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Pharmaceutical Committee

We have not reverted to the term “retail pharmacy” in The Pharmaceutical Journal. The section to which Mr Holden refers will soon be a stand-alone publication. We deliberately chose the title Retail Pharmacy to reflect the fact that the new publication will look primarily at business issues affecting pharmacy rather than any clinical or practice aspects. However, the title of the new publication is under review.
