CD handling to be in annual Healthcare Commission check

CD management is to be scrutinised |
How well NHS trusts manage Controlled Drugs is to be assessed as part of the Healthcare Commission's annual
health check for 2007–08.
The commission has set out its plans for future assessments and says
it intends to focus on safety. As part of this, it will ask health care
organisations to consider their compliance with new CD Regulations introduced
in 2006 and will monitor collaboration with “responsible bodies” as
described in these regulations.
The commission intends to publish an annual report to indicate trends
in poor performance and good practice relating to the management of CDs.
Another area that the commission will focus on is health care-associated
infections, with progress on controlling Clostridium
difficile having an impact on performance
ratings.
Commissioning is also set to come under the scrutiny of the Healthcare
Commission. It plans to develop a performance assessment framework for
commissioning this year and use it to monitor how effectively primary
care trusts buy services on behalf of communities. This part of the commission’s
annual health check is likely to come into effect for the 2008–09
assessment.
The proposals for developing the annual health check are set out in a
report
published earlier this week.
