SMC accepts five medicines, rejects four, in latest advice
Pioglitazone (Actos) has been accepted for use within NHS Scotland to treat type 2 diabetes as part of a triple therapy regimen with metformin and a sulphonylurea.
The Scottish
Medicines Consortium also accepts Suboxone (buprenorphine/naloxone)
for restricted use as substitution treatment for opioid dependence.
Ivabradine (Procoralan) has been endorsed for symptomatic treatment of
chronic stable angina in patients with normal sinus rhythm who do not
tolerate beta-blockers and
calcium-channel blockers. Exforge (amlodipine/valsartan) has been accepted
for patients whose blood pressure is not adequately controlled on amlodipine
or valsartan monotherapy, and parathyroid hormone (Preotact) has been
recommended for the treatment of women with severe osteoporosis and at
least two prior vertebral fractures.
The four drugs rejected by the SMC are glyceryl trinitrate ointment (Rectogesic)
for chronic anal fissures, alglucosidase alfa (Myozyme) for Pompe disease,
clostridium botulinum type A toxin (Dysport) for the treatment of focal
spasticity and lidocaine plaster (Versatis) for the treatment of post-herpetic
neuralgia.
