Society gives evidence to Galbraith review

Evidence on the community pharmacy contract in England was presented by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society to Anne Galbraith's contract review last week.

Society Council member Douglas Simpson said: “This review is likely to have far reaching implications for community pharmacy. In presenting the evidence to Anne Galbraith it was important to stress how effective the current network of community pharmacies is in providing expert health care to patients.

“We expressed concern that the network was in danger of being destabilised by some of the exemptions to the control of entry rules, particularly by that for 100-hour pharmacies. We also raised concerns about the difficulties faced by community pharmacists in accessing funding available from PCTs to provide extended services. We emphasised that there was much more that pharmacists could do in terms of medicines management and pharmaceutical care, particularly for patients with long-term conditions.”
