AstraZeneca improves product security using tamper seals

AstraZeneca is to be one of the first pharmaceutical companies to make all individual packs of a medicine traceable throughout the supply chain. Packs of Nexium (esomeprazole) are to be sealed with new tamper-evident seals and marked with unique carton numbers using a two-dimensional matrix code.

The company’s product security director, David Teale, said: “The system will eventually help facilitate the identification or verification of products across the entire supply chain from the point of manufacture to the point of dispensing.”
