Society tells Europe about pharmacist prescribing

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society has organised a one-day conference to introduce Europe to the UK experience of pharmacist prescribing.

The event is aimed principally at representatives of pharmacy organisations, competent authorities and government health departments across continental European. But it is also expected to be of interest to others and it has already attracted participants from Britain.

The conference takes place on 11 June at a hotel in Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport. It is scheduled to start at 11am and end at 4.30pm so that participants can travel in and out on the day.

The conference will begin with an introduction by the chief pharmacist for England, Keith Ridge, after which participants will hear presentations from senior staff of the Society and pharmacists and physicians involved in pharmacist prescribing schemes.

Speakers will explain why UK pharmacists were keen to take the step into prescribing and how pharmacist prescribers have responded to the challenges offered. They will also describe how pharmacy organisations in the UK worked together to take the prescribing agenda forward, learning from the experiences of the nursing profession in gaining prescribing rights.
