A charitable fund to help University of Sunderland pharmacy students who suffer hardship was launched during the re-cent annual dinner dance of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's Sunderland branch.
To be known as the Hope C. M. Winch Benevolence Fund, the charity was
launched by branch chairman Mark Burdon. During a short speech, he said: “The
benevolence fund is a collaborative effort between the local branch of
the Society, the Hope
Winch Society (see PJ, 23/30 December 2006, p794)
and the school of pharmacy at Sunderland university. It will be a fund
of money to help university pharmacy students in genuine hardship via
a loan system. The head of each organisation sits on the board of management
to administer it.”
Mr Burdon urged pharmacists who have done well out of a pharmacy education
at Sunderland to consider donating money into the fund to help future
members of the profession. Proceeds of a raffle were donated to kick-start
the fund.
Guests at the event, held on 3 February, included Sue Sharpe (chief executive
of
the Pharmaceutical Services Negotiating Committee), David Sharpe (former
chairman of the PSNC and past president of the Society), Umesh Patel
(chairman of the National Pharmacy Association) and Jim Smith (professor
of pharmacy practice and policy at the University of Sunderland). |
