Boots travel insurance
We who use Boots medicines should expect some consideration
From Mr N. Evans, MRPharmS
I wonder whether Boots The Chemists is truly a health care company?
Despite being normotensive with a cholesterol level of 4.3mmol/L, thanks
to amlodipine and simvastatin, I have been refused travel insurance by
Boots.
My level of cardiovascular risk is well below that recognised in most
guidelines of 20 per cent over the next 10 years, but I have been unable
to obtain an explanation from the company or its actuaries of the level
of risk they are willing to accept. Perhaps they are only willing to
accept premiums from those unlikely to make a claim.
I recognise that it is not a charity, but if we are to benefit from the
medicines dispensed by Boots we should expect some consideration other
than blank refusal.
Insurance companies need to be informed of the beneficial outcomes of
modern medicines.

KEVIN JOHNSON, general manager, Boots Insurance Services, responds:
Boots’s
travel insurance has been designed to ensure that all our customers
have full medical cover while they are abroad, including
cover
for pre-existing conditions.
We have worked hard to include as many pre-existing conditions as
possible within our standard policy, so for example people with well
controlled asthma can get
full cover for their condition at the standard price.
Although we are unable to comment specifically on an individual basis, in
line with other insurers, applications are assessed and based on a customer’s
medical condition and are not based on cardiovascular risk prediction charts.
Where there is a combination of certain medical conditions we are unable to
provide cover on our standard policy.
Where we are unable to offer our standard product, we refer our customers
to a different policy where the condition will be covered for an additional
charge. |
