Tribute

Wells in a tribute to the late Kenneth Charles Wells (PJ, 24 February, p231), NORAH THORNTHWAITE writes:

Ken Wells was much respected as a pharmacist by colleagues and customers alike. He was always ready to listen to other people’s troubles and would go to great lengths to comfort and advise them. His colleagues at Boots, his employers and the staff at Vane House pharmacy hugely regret his passing. Many of those people have sent messages to Ken’s family expressing their gratitude.

I am proud to say that Ken Wells was one of my dearest friends, always cheerful and welcoming. I miss him greatly. For 40 years I have been privileged to be a part of the family Ken and his wife Judith created. Ken was enormously proud of the achievements of their two sons Christopher and Jonathan and was truly delighted when grandson Daniel came along. He was supportive to his family and friends, always unselfish and giving even when he was ill. Ken remained positive and strong throughout the three years of his final illness and is an inspiration to many.

As Ken was always ready to offer the hand of friendship and loved Sunderland and its people, his family thought it would be fitting to have a lasting tribute to Ken’s life. Judith is exploring ways of helping disadvantaged and homeless people in the Sunderland area. Ken’s family are grateful for the generous donations (£3,500 to date) received for the Ken Wells Memorial Fund mentioned in John Jolley’s tribute (PJ, 24 February, p231) along with the many kind messages and tributes to Ken. He was such an unassuming person he would have been overwhelmed to realise he had made such a difference to so many lives.

Ken will never be forgotten by those who knew him. As his brother remarked. “Ken has made an indelible footprint on this world and had a wonderfully successful life.”
