Offer stop smoking help at work, says NICE
Employees should be allowed to attend smoking cessation services during working hours without loss of pay, the National Institute for Clinical Health and Excellence has recommended. Furthermore, where feasible, and where there is sufficient demand, employers should provide onsite stop smoking support.
In its latest public health
intervention guidance NICE recommends that
smoking cessation service providers should offer proven interventions
by trained staff and ensure that support and treatment is tailored to
employees’ needs and preferences, taking into account their circumstances
and offering locations and schedules to suit them.
Management
of anxiety and depression NICE has also issued updated guidelines on the management
of anxiety and depression in primary and secondary care. The
guidelines now take account of new
safety advice issued by the Medicines and
Healthcare products Regulatory Agency on venlafaxine (PJ, 3 June 2006, p647).
