Jeff Harris: e-mail cuts cost of branch mailings

Jeff Harris (Oxfordshire) proposed a motion calling on the Society to investigate a way in which branches and regions could contact all their members by sending a single e-mail. His branch had adopted e-mail several years ago and it had cut down the cost of mailings. As vice-chairman of the Chiltern region, he would also like to send information to the region’s 6,200 members.

Anthony Cox (Birmingham) said he could see no technical reason why the Society should not create a password-protected server area with mailing lists containing e-mail addresses of members, so that one could put one’s e-mail into a box and press submit, avoiding having to use one’s own e-mail programme.

Gavin Miller (West Metropolitan) said that, to reduce the distribution of spam e-mails, many internet service providers or e-mail systems limited the number of e-mails that could be sent at one time. Some e-mail systems could not use the e-mail lists in the format sent to branches and had to input the information manually. Doing that was no fun. A system where a single e-mail could be sent to all members would be extremely helpful.
