Fifth type of animal medicine proposed to fill gap in system

Another category of veterinary medicine has been proposed to fill a perceived gap in the current four-category system (PDF 20K).

The new category, which might be known as POM-V(HP) [health plan] or POM-HP, would come between the group of medicines that have to be prescribed by a veterinary surgeon and those that can be prescribed by vets, pharmacists and suitably qualified persons.

The proposed new classification would be for medicines intended for ongoing treatment or for control of an epidemic or persistent disease in farm animals following initial diagnosis by a vet. It would require initial prescription by a vet, but further supplies would be possible under POM-VPS arrangements for a period specified in the vet’s prescription.

The thinking of the Veterinary Products Committee, which has proposed the new classification, is that the POM-V classification is too restrictive when treatment has to be initiated by a vet, but does not need ongoing veterinary intervention and that POM-VPS is too lax because no veterinary intervention would be required and a product might be used inappropriately.
