Council to proceed with revision of content of pharmacy education
A proposal to revise the content of the education of prospective pharmacists has been approved by the Council of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society.
The proposal — the second phase of the Society’s “Fit
for the future” education reform programme — was agreed at
the June Council
meeting.
Presenting the proposal, the chairman of the Education Committee, Graham
Phillips, reminded the Council that at its March meeting it had agreed
a document on the principles of pharmacy education. The second phase
was to look in a holistic way at the content and delivery of the pharmacy
degree course and preregistration training. There
were several parts to the review — initial scoping work and a series
of awareness-raising event and then initial design, consultation, further
redesign and ultimately agreement by the Council, to be followed by a
dissemination. It was a detailed and proper process in which people would
be thoroughly consulted.
Mr Phillips said that there were some concerns that the process might
lead to a dumbing down of the scientific content of the pharmacy course.
But what he wanted to see was the clinical input raised to the same level
as the scientific input.
Mr Phillips added that there would be links with pharmacy technician
education, which was not being forgotten.
Sylvia Hikins emphasised the need to involve the whole range of stakeholders
in the invitation to be part of the process.
