Sorafenib rejected in Wales
Use of sorafenib (Nexavar; Bayer) in NHS Wales has been rejected by the All Wales Medicines Strategy Group.
The group made its decision on the basis of a lack of evidence for the
drug’s cost-effectiveness, it says. The recommendation has been
endorsed by Edwina Hart, the Welsh Assembly Government’s Minister
for Health and Social Services. The Department of Health has not yet
referred the drug to the
National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, which covers England
and Wales, and the AWMSG’s guidance is mandatory unless superseded
by NICE guidance. The Scottish Medicines Consortium rejected the use
of sorafenib in NHS Scotland last year.
