Chloramphenicol ointment makes the POM-to-P switch

Chloramphenicol eye ointment 1 per cent can now be sold over the counter to people with conjunctivitis, following last week's approval of the POM-to-P switch by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency.

Sadia Khan, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s lead pharmacist for self care, said: “The Society believes that the availability of chloramphenicol eye ointment without prescription will improve choice by enabling pharmacists to offer customers who prefer to use an ointment with an alternative to eye drops.”

Training materials from manufacturers will provide guidance to help pharmacists advise patients on the most appropriate formulation.
