Public health career framework consultation
Consultation on a draft public health skills and career framework has been launched by Skills for Health.
The framework is multidisciplinary, UK-wide and applies to the public
health workforce. It spans nine career levels, from entry to the most
senior posts in organisations. For each level it specifies the competencies
and knowledge base required. Competencies are split into core competencies,
required by all those working in public health, and defined competencies,
which apply to discrete disciplines of public health.
The framework is a tool for individuals, including pharmacists, at any
stage of their career to identify a pathway for skills and career progression.
It can also be used by managers, education and training providers, and
commissioners.
Chris Lamb, Skills for Health project manager, told The Journal: “From
our perspective, pharmacists have a critical and central role in public
health.”
Following consultation, the framework will be revised as appropriate
and submitted to the four UK health departments for implementation. Formal
sign off will also be sought from the national public health standard
setting bodies.
The consultation closes on 21 September 2007. An online
response form can be completed or comments can be e-mailed
to phcf@skillsforhealth.org.uk
Skills for Health would also like organisations, teams or groups to test
the framework. The results of any pilot testing must be sent to Skills
for Health by 14 September in order to inform the final framework.
