Dawn Primarolo is named new minister in charge of pharmacy
Dawn Primarolo, Minister of State for Public Health, is the new minister responsible for pharmacy at the Department of Health.
Ms Primarolo’s responsibilities also cover health improvement and
health protection issues, including such areas as tobacco, obesity, drugs
and sexual health, as well as
international business, and research and
development.
At the same time as Prime Minister Gordon Brown formed a new Government,
the opposition parties shuffled their shadow ministerial teams.
Pharmacist MP for Romsey, Sandra Gidley, remains a member of the Liberal
Democrat’s shadow health team, which is led by Norman Lamb (North
Norfolk). A third member of the LibDem shadow health team is John Pugh
(Southport).
On the Conservative benches, the shadow health team comprises Andrew
Lansley (South Cambridgeshire) as shadow health secretary, with Stephen
O’Brien (Eddisbury), Mark Simmonds (Boston and Skegness), Anne
Milton (Guildford), Mike Penning (Hemel Hempstead), Earl Howe and Lord
McColl of Dulwich as shadow ministers. Mr Penning holds the pharmacy
brief. Earl Howe is responsible for pharmaceuticals. Ms Milton’s
brief includes NHS professional
regulation.
Alison White, National Pharmacy Association chief executive, said: “I
look forward to meeting [Ms Primarolo] over the coming months, not least
to discuss several pressing issues including the Government’s response
to changes in the medicine’s supply chain and the proposed reclassification
of pseudoephedrine.”
