Non-prescription medicines’ (3rd edition), by Alan Nathan. Pp 441. Price 29.95. Pharmaceutical Press;2006.
ISBN 0 85369 644 6

Non-prescription medicinesThe third edition of this book discusses, in great detail, over-the-counter treatments for minor ailments. It is targeted at pharmacists, GPs and other health care professionals. It would also be useful for pharmacy undergraduates.

The book contains 41 chapters and covers illnesses ranging from coughs and colds to hay fever and cystitis. Practically every minor ailment treatable with OTC medicines has been included. The latest edition also has chapters on migraine, cardiovascular drugs, and fungal nail infection and treatments.

Each chapter begins by explaining the nature of the medical condition followed by extensive information about non-prescription treatments available. Each condition usually has one or more different drugs listed as a treatment. These are examined individually. Each drug’s mode of action, dosage, cautions, side effects, etc, are explained in detail. Brand names of OTC medicines are also included. The chapter ends with a summary and a list of references.

All minor illnesses that can be treated by a pharmacist are included in this book. And, for this reason, it is a must read for every pharmacist.

This book should be available in every pharmacy as an invaluable source of reference. It also contains a detailed index.
