Continuing professional development (CPD)

I do take an interest

From Dr R. C. Jacob, MRPharmS

I am thankful that, as a non-practising pharmacist, I am not required to present any continuing professional development. I do, however, take an interest in the subject.

I note that in the New Penguin Dictionary of Abbreviations (2000), there are three other entries apart from continuing professional development under CPD. They are “cape photographic durchmusterung” (a star catalogue in astronomy), “chronic pulmonary disease” (medical term) and “contact potential difference” (term used in electronics). These are quite distinct from “cpd” (compound) and “c.p.d.” (which stands for “charterers pay dues” in commerce).

My favourite bedtime reading is Martindale’s Extra Pharmacopoeia, 27th edition, 1977. I was thrilled to learn that CPD has another meaning, citrate-phosphate-dextrose, in relation to the storage of blood. If I ever knew that, it has long been forgotten.

It can be seen that I try to keep up to date.
