OFT still pressing for control-of-entry rules to be scrapped

Pressure is being maintained on the Department of Health by the Office of Fair Trading to remove remaining restrictions over granting new NHS pharmacy contracts.

The OFT’s annual report for 2006–07 (PDF 1.2MB) says that discussions between the DoH and the OFT continued and that the OFT is sticking to its view that lifting restrictions will improve competition and reduce the price of over-the-counter medicines. The OFT believes that price cuts would save consumers between £25m and £30m a year.
