Tributes

Edge and Parr In a tribute to the late Harold Edge and the late John Parr, HARRY WHITE writes:

My first introduction to Harold was as his apprentice at Timothy Whites, Bradshawgate, Bolton (now Smalls Army Stores).

He was the perfect gentleman, who never swore or lost his temper, which was tried at times because the old pharmacy had low beams in the cellar and a narrow staircase with no handrail.

Harold moved to McAllisters, Market Street, Westhoughton (now a Rowlands pharmacy) in 1956, taking over as manager from John Parr (known as Jack). Jack had managed the pharmacy for over 20 years and even after Harold took over, he used to come in and do the book-keeping.

To mark his 100th birthday in June 2005, Jack donated some shares he had purchased in the 1980s to Christie Cancer Hospital in Manchester. The hospital was amazed to receive £1.78m on cashing the shares and will never forget his generosity. Harold Edge was possibly the only person who could have given a full account of Jack’s life but, sadly, he died about a month after Jack.

Jack lived in Park Road, Westhoughton, with his wife Doris for over 60 years until she died eight years ago. The couple had no children.

Harold leaves a wife Kathleen, sons Michael and James, and daughter Louise.

These two pharmacists will be sadly missed by all those who had the good fortune to have known them.
