Welsh trust mergers proposed

Proposed mergers of several NHS trusts, which are designed to streamline management, have been supported in principle by Welsh Health Minister Edwina Hart.

Mrs Hart agreed to the formal merger of Pontypridd & Rhondda NHS Trust and North Glamorgan NHS Trust, to form Cwm Taff NHS Trust from 1 April 2008. She also gave permission for the project board established by Ceredigion and Mid Wales NHS Trust, Pembrokeshire and Derwen NHS Trust and Carmarthenshire NHS Trust to review the possibility of a merger from 1 April 2008.

Swansea NHS Trust and Bro Morgannwg NHS Trust are also to begin talks about a possible merger.
