Guidance on stop smoking services launched

Detailed guidance to help pharmacists and pharmacy staff in England provide effective NHS stop smoking services has been launched by PharmacyHealthLink (PDF 1.5MB).

The guidance, “Towards a smokefree England — brief interventions for stopping smoking by pharmacists and their staff”, was developed in conjunction with the Department of Health. It explains the key distinctions between brief advice and brief interventions, gives advice on delivering brief interventions, includes a summary of National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence recommendations on smoking cessation services and lists further sources of information for pharmacists to use.

The guidance is primarily intended for use by community pharmacy staff but PharmacyHealthLink believes it is an appropriate framework for other pharmacy staff, such as in hospitals or primary care, to adapt and use.
