Legionnaires' disease on the increase

A rise in the number of legionnaires' disease cases was reported last week by the Health Protection Agency.

In the first six months of this year, 163 cases were reported in England and Wales, up from 120 cases and 103 cases in the first half of 2006 and 2005, respectively.

Some 57 per cent of this year’s cases were contracted in the community, 3 per cent in hospital, 6 per cent while travelling in the UK and 34 per cent while travelling overseas.
