Pharmacy practice framework evaluated by patients and public

Twenty patient and public groups took part in an event at the Novartis Foundation on 14 August that saw them test the Royal Pharmaceutical Society's draft pharmacy practice framework.

The pharmacy practice framework will help define the future roles of the pharmacist and the pharmacy team, including the skills and behaviours essential to these roles (PJ, 2 June, p651). Training that is required to ensure consistent and safe practice across the pharmacy sector will also be considered as part of the process.

Graham Phillips, member of the Society’s Council and chairman of its Education Committee, said: “Under the Society’s new public and patient involvement (PPI) strategy we are working towards engaging with external groups in all the work that we do. This event was a good example of how the Society can disseminate information to these groups and draw on input from a wide range of stakeholders as an integral part of the policy-making process.”

The proposed framework is open for consultation via the Society’s website

Those without internet access can obtain copies of the draft framework from John Sloan, Education Projects Policy Manager, Education and Registration, Royal Pharmaceutical Society, 1 Lambeth High Street, London SE1 7JN (tel 020 7572 2276; e-mail john.sloan@rpsgb.org). The consultation will be open until 30 October 2007.
