Importance of warfarin and cranberry juice interaction

From Mr A. C. Thomson, MRPharmS

Having just read the new “Oral anticoagulant therapy information for patients” pack, which is clear and easy to read, I believe an important interaction is missing, namely, that between warfarin and cranberry juice.

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency states (Current Problems, volume 30, October 2004): “Patients taking warfarin should avoid taking cranberry juice, or other cranberry products unless the health benefits are considered to outweigh any risks”.

I have not seen a patient who has experienced this interaction but it is important that we still highlight this concern and that the National Patient Safety Agency includes it in the next version of the pack.
