Safety of glitazones

Further evidence linking glitazones with an increased risk of heart failure has been published in JAMA.

A systematic review of longer-term rosiglitazone data suggests an increased risk of myocardial infarction and heart failure but no significant difference in cardiovascular or all-cause mortality compared with placebo (2007;298:1189).

A second study shows a reduced risk of heart attack, stroke and death for pioglitazone but an increased risk of serious heart failure (ibid, p1180).
