Institute of Life Science to stimulate health research in Wales

Multidisciplinary health care research has been given a boost with the opening of a centre in Swansea. As well as having the latest research and laboratory facilities, Swansea University's Institute of Life Science also hosts a business development centre, which aims to build long-term commercial and academic links and enhance employment opportunities in the region.

The ILS was opened this week by Andrew Davies, Welsh Assembly Government Minister for Finance and Public Service Delivery. He said: “It is a prime example of how government, academia and the private sector working together can help place Wales at the forefront of science and research.”

Richard Davies, the university’s vice-chancellor, said: “The ILS is one of the most significant research developments on any UK university campus, and it is enabling us to bring huge benefits for Swansea, Wales and the UK in terms of advances in health and medical care and economic development through exciting partnerships with some of the world’s leading companies.”

The ILS has joined forces with Boots The Chemists to establish the Boots Centre for Innovation (BCI). According to the institute, the BCI is designed to be an accessible point of contact for new ideas in health care and medical research, and is backed by a £300,000 regional selective assistance grant from the WAG.

“The BCI will attract and co-operate with researchers and entrepreneurs from around the world to help transform ideas into commercial products. It is likely that some of the products and technologies generated will end up on retailers’ shelves,” a Swansea University spokesman said.
