Repeat dispensing offers business opportunity

Two community pharmacies in Worthing, West Sussex, have formed a company with GPs in the town to offer online ordering of repeat prescriptions by patients.

Patients from participating GP surgeries — there are 14 of them — can sign up with the service online and receive e-mail alerts each time they need to get a repeat prescription. If the prescription is needed, patients request them online and the requests are forwarded to the relevant GP.

The prescription is returned to the selected pharmacy for dispensing. Patients then have the option of collecting dispensed medicines from the pharmacy or having them delivered to their homes or workplaces free of charge.

Worthing pharmacist Paul Howie — who is managing director of the company — said: “We are aiming to give patients more time, a more efficient service and one that will lead to fewer mistakes being made. Repeating your prescription should be no more effort than renewing your library books.”
