Decongestant pack size limits proposed

Proposals for statutory limits to the size of over-the-counter packs of products that contain pseudoephedrine or ephedrine have been put out for consultation by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency.

If accepted, packs will be limited to 720mg of pseudoephedrine and 180mg of ephedrine if products are not to become available only on prescription. It will also become an offence for pharmacies to sell more than one pack in a single transaction.

The proposed limits will come into effect on 1 April 2008. The consultation is available online and closes on 13 November 2007.
