Tribute
Hendra In a tribute to the late John Hendra, Hopkin Maddock
writes:
It was with great regret that I heard of John Hendra’s
death at the age of 92. The older generation of Cornish pharmacists would
immediately recognise John’s name due to his dedication to pharmacy
in Cornwall. I think we first met many years ago at a Society branch
representatives’ meeting, where he always had the endearing (and
irritating) habit of playing with a bunch of keys in his pocket, whenever
he stood to make a contribution. I am given to understand that after
the 1939–45 war he was the first pharmacist to be appointed as
an officer of the Cornish branch of the Society.
John served for many years on the board of the National Pharmaceutical
Association, where his practical experience and knowledge made a valuable
contribution. As far as the local dimension was concerned in Cornwall,
he effectively was the NPA. There is no question that for many years
he could be truly described as the voice of Cornish pharmacy. He served
as a member of the local pharmaceutical committee since the war until
his retirement from business. During that time he was appointed to the
position of all its offices and he was secretary for many years.
John had no hesitation in giving me a ring, regardless of the day of
the week or time of day (even in his latter years), to discuss some problem
or other with regard to pharmacy — the furtherance of the ideals
of pharmacy were never far from his thoughts. Pharmacists who worked
with him always recognised that they had to listen carefully to his advice — he
was a stickler and everything had to be done the correct way.
In his personal life John was a keen supporter of the museum in Truro.
He was a talented musician being a member of various choirs — he
could often be heard singing quietly in his pharmacy, going over some
extract of a piece his choir was about to perform.
We extend our deepest sympathy and condolences to his wife Iris, together
with Simon (also a pharmacist), Vivian, Caroline and his grandchildren.
