Open Day

Reply from Hemant Patel, President of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society

Where were the lay Council members?

From Mr C. Friedland, MRPharmS

I really must congratulate the Royal Pharmaceutical Society for the way it opened its doors to the members at its recent Open Day. The sunny weather made a delightful contribution to the general atmosphere of the occasion. It was a real opportunity to engage with the staff and for members to see just how wide a scope the Society has. It is just such a shame the Society does not take the opportunity more often to trumpet its successes.

Many congratulations to the new Chief Executive Jeremy Holmes, who, though he told us that he was only three weeks into the job, impressed us with his comprehensive grasp of the pharmacy agenda. He is clearly up for the challenge of a changing atmosphere and appears eager to engage with the membership at every opportunity.

It was nice to be able to meet and speak to a number of Council members. I had been particularly keen to meet some of the lay members but was told that none was present. Was I correctly informed and if I was, what is the explanation for the absence of lay Council members given that this was an ideal opportunity to engage with members of the Society in what is a critical time of change for the profession?

Colin Friedland
Welwyn, Hertfordshire

HEMANT PATEL, President of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, responds:

I am extremely pleased that the Open Day proved so popular with those members who attended. This was a new initiative designed to help the Society to better engage with the membership and to listen to what they have to say on key issues.

My fellow Council members dedicate a great deal of time on behalf of the profession attending Council meetings, strategy days, committee meetings and branch and regional events.

Unfortunately, due to prior engagements, not all members of Council were able to attend the Open Day but I can assure members that they are all fully committed to the pharmacy cause at this challenging and exciting time for the profession.

The Society is committed to building its relationship with the membership and, as part of this work, we are already planning for a second Open Day in spring 2008.
