Interesting starting point for information on paediatric pharmacy

Paediatric drug handling’, by Ian K. Wong, Catherine Tuleu, Ian Costello, Vincent Yeung and Paul Long. Pp 144. Price £24.95. London: Pharmaceutical Press; 2007. ISBN 978 0 85369 686 5

Paediatric drug handlingThis book provides a background to paediatric pharmacy as well as a comprehensive review of issues related to children’s medication. Written by experts in different fields, the book covers important areas such as pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics and pharmacogenomics.

They also cover formulations for children, risk management in paediatric drug therapy and international regulations relating to clinical trials and the use of medicines in children.

The chapters progress in a way that allows the reader to work their way from current problems encountered on the ward through to more strategic issues.

The text is well supported with photographs and diagrams and it also makes good use of flowcharts to illustrate important messages.

The book provides a balanced view of the issues and problems faced by both the health care sector and the pharmaceutical industry in getting paediatric products licensed.

This is an important resource for pharmaceutical scientists as well as pharmacists working in the field of paediatrics or medicines information, or those with a specific interest in risk management or clinical governance.

Although this book does not cover all issues related to the field of pharmaceutical management in paediatrics, it does make for an interesting starting point at an extremely reasonable price.
