Evolution of pharmacy
A series of illustrated information sheets on the evolution of pharmacy
was launched at the Royal Pharmaceutical Society headquarters in London
last week.
The sheets have been produced by the British Society for the History
of Pharmacy in association with the Society. The series explores five
themes (the development of the profession; the history of the Pharmaceutical
Society; the development of medicines; the development of dosage forms;
and the control of harmful substances) and users can choose from three
levels of information: an introductory overview, an investigation into
the topic and a detailed look at a specific subject. It is aimed at pharmacy
lecturers who want to add historical content into their teaching, students,
technicians and anyone wanting to investigate past practice.
Shirley Ellis, chairman of the BSHP education committee, said the series
was partly developed in recognition of the fact that it is becoming less
common for pharmacists to come from a long family line of pharmacists
and that many students arrive at university not knowing much about the
history of pharmacy.
