Scottish contract payments dependent on training

IT training toolkit must be completed by the end of January 2008

Pharmacy contractors in Scotland must complete IT and clinical training in order to receive the next phases of contract preparation payments (PJ, 9 June, p663).

For phase 2, pharmacists must complete a nationally co-ordinated IT training programme. Every community pharmacy will be sent an IT toolkit by early December that has been developed by community pharmacy IM&T facilitators.

“ Community pharmacists should work their way through the toolkit by the end of January 2008,” this week’s NHS circular (PDF, 80K) states. In addition, pharmacists need to ensure they train pharmacy staff in relevant parts of the programme by the end of March 2008.

Phase 3 involves two clinical training packs provided by NHS Education for Scotland. The topics are chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and rheumatoid arthritis. Packs are available through local NES courses or direct from NES Pharmacy, and must be completed by the end of March 2008.

Other aspects of phase 3 include premises development (PJ, 1 September, p225) and completion of an NES pack on the acute medication service, which will be available early next year. Harry McQuillan, chief executive officer, Community Pharmacy Scotland, commented: “The timescales are tight but had to be so to secure contract funding by March [the end of the financial year].”
