Gastric cancer survival

Combination of tegafur, gimeracil and oteracil — under investigation as “S-1” in Japan — has been shown to improve survival in a study of 529 East Asians with stage II or III gastric cancer (New England Journal of Medicine 2007;357:1810).

Patients receiving oral S-1 following surgery had a lower risk of death than those randomised to surgery only (P=0.0003).
