Separating professional regulation and representation

GPhC comes a step closer

Legislation to enable the creation of the General Pharmaceutical Council and transfer to it the regulatory functions of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society has been tabled in the House of Commons.

The Health and Social Care Bill contains proposed amendments to the Health Act 1999 that will widen the application of the Section 60 Orders that are being used to reform professional regulation in the UK.

The Department of Health has indicated that, as a result, implementation of mandatory continuing professional development for pharmacists — originally planned to come into force in the autumn of 2008 — will now be delayed until the GPhC is established in January 2010.
