Keppra
Several cases of incorrect dose administration have been reported with Keppra (levetiracetam; UCB Pharma) concentrate for solution for infusion.

The errors were caused by misinterpretation of the labelling attached to the vials where the concentration (“100mg/ml”) is in bold and in larger characters than the total content of the vial (“500mg/5ml levetiracetam”).

Patients were administered five times the prescribed dose. Labelling on the vials is being changed to make it more obvious that each vial of Keppra concentrate for infusion contains 500mg of levetiracetam.

UCB Pharma is advising pharmacists to keep this in mind when dispensing prescriptions for Keppra and to pass on this information to relevant staff.

Pharmacists who have observed cases of misinterpretation of the labelling attached to the vials should report any adverse events to UCB Pharma on 01753 534655. Further information is also available on this number.
