Special meetings are a success for Welsh board

In a move designed to extend its engagement with members, the Welsh Pharmacy Board held three special meetings in November to brief members on current developments affecting pharmacy in Wales and invite participation in discussions.

The events were spread across south, north and west Wales, starting at Carmarthen, Dyfed on 6 November, then Denbighshire, North Wales on 8 November and Cardiff on 13 November 2007. The meetings replaced the annual general meeting and lecture held in previous years, and attendance at the events was double that of the usual AGM. Before the meeting, members were invited to a light buffet meal that provided a further opportunity to network with colleagues.

The range of presentations and topics discussed at each event included the work of the board (presented by board chairman, Peter Jones), professional development in Wales, changes to pharmacy regulation and professional leadership (with the formation of the new General Pharmaceutical Council), the Pharmacy 2020 consultation and the importance of members having their say in what the profession will look like in 10 years’ time.

Each event was attended by a representative cross-section of the pharmacy profession, including community, hospital, primary care and undergraduate level. A number of technicians also participated in the debates.

Mr Jones said that with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society and the profession facing some of the biggest challenges and opportunities in its history, it was essential for members to be fully aware of important initiatives and to have the opportunity to voice their views. “We are committed to having more effective, direct communication with the members in Wales,” Peter said.

Feedback showed that the events were widely supported and appreciated by members.
