Letters to the Editor

The Society

Make as much “emeritus” information available as possible

From Mr. B. Rhodes

I was grateful for some clarification in The Journal regarding the details of the proposed introduction of “emeritus” status for qualifying members and fellows (PJ, 17 November 2007, p565).

It does seem rather strange that the byelaws are being changed before the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s Council has decided on the details, but I suppose we should be grateful for small mercies.

We are informed that those so designated will not have to pay a fee nor will they be allowed use titles or postnominals. This means they will have the honour but not be allowed to tell anyone and one might question how many will avail themselves of that opportunity.

It has yet to be decided if they will be allowed to attend an annual general meeting but, if they do, will they be allowed they speak or vote and will they be allowed to vote in elections, bearing in mind that the award is for those who have retired from the Register?

It is reassuring that those concerned will be entitled to receive The Journal for £30 per year if they so wish since that will allow them to keep in touch with the profession, if only to check if their name is in the obituaries section. This should mean that most of those who opted for non-practising registration will now prudently take advantage of the £30 option.

What is important is that as much information as possible is available before the deadline for payment of fees is due since it is not easy to persuade a disgruntled pharmacist who has resigned to come back.
