“Virtual” chain for independents launched

UniChem has launched a “virtual” chain for independent pharmacies in the UK, providing them with support for professional and business services.

Alphega Pharmacy, launched last week in partnership with Alliance Healthcare, is a pan-European chain, with over 800 members in France, Italy and Spain. It is currently being piloted in five UK pharmacies.

Jeremy Main, chief commercial officer at UniChem, said that Alphega Pharmacy will provide support for enhanced professional services in addition to retail operations and pharmacists will be supported by a virtual chain services manager who will help them to develop their business.

Mr Main said: “Alphega Pharmacy is a virtual chain concept unlike any other in the UK market at the moment. It builds on the strengths of the successful pan-European model, to offer independent pharmacists the chance to transform their pharmacies into modern, leading-edge businesses, while at the same time retaining their independence and local recognition within their community.”
