Top UniChem award goes to Wimbledon pharmacist

Raj Patel, an independent pharmacist from Mount Elgon Pharmacy, Wimbledon, was named this year's overall winner at the UniChem pharmacy awards 2007.

Mr Patel, who opened his first pharmacy two years ago, won the award for demonstrating a high standard in the categories of promotion of health care services within the community, working in partnership with a community health care team and enhancing the retail experience.

Other winners were:

• Richard Evans, Tysul Pharmacy, Llandysul, Dyfed (promotion of health care services within the community)

• John Goes, JP Goes Pharmacy, Coventry (working in partnership with a community health care team)

• Harish and Dihmant Patel, Courtenay Chemist, St John’s Wood (enhancing the retail experience)

Additional awards included the most supportive technician in community pharmacy, which went to Samantha Ward, from CG Murray & Son Ltd, Stourbridge, West Midlands, who has taken responsibility for many of the operational issues in the dispensary and co-ordinated a move to a new health centre pharmacy.

The UniChem customer forum pharmacy student award (in association with the British Pharmaceutical Students’ Association) was presented to Seema Mehta, a student at King’s College London, for demonstrating a comprehensive insight into the impact of the community pharmacy contract on the profession.

The Almus patient safety award was presented to Dale McVeigh, deputy superintendent pharmacist at Weldricks Pharmacy, Doncaster, for creating a new working environment to reduce dispensing errors, ensure a more complete patient medication record and increase the number of medicines use reviews.

The winners were presented with their awards at a ceremony in London on 23 November 2007.
