Museum wins heritage fund award for educational and outreach activities
The museum of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society has been awarded £49,300
from the Heritage Lottery Fund to create an “audience development
programme”.
The project, which will run for over 18 months, aims
to encourage people to explore, enjoy and learn about the museum’s
collections through a range of educational and outreach activities. It
will target three key audiences: pharmacy students and lecturers; primary
and secondary school students and London-based adults.
“Receiving this grant has opened up a huge range of exciting possibilities
for the museum. We are really looking forward to many more people being
able to benefit from what the museum has to offer,” said Briony
Hudson, keeper of the museum collections.
Part of the funding will be used to employ an audience development officer
to create new museum services, such as “behind the scenes” sessions
to provide access to objects that are not normally on display, heritage
trails, schools’ resources, an online guide to beginning research
in pharmacy history and lecture toolkits.
The project will also include the development of existing pilot projects,
including pharmacy debate packs for secondary school students and “The
evolution of pharmacy: an online resource for pharmacy students and
lecturers”,
which was launched last month (PJ, 20 October 2007, p452).
“This project means that the museum’s fascinating collection of
artefacts, photographs and advertisements will, in future, be available
to a much wider audience ranging from academics and pharmacy students
to local schools and residents,” said Sue Bowers, London region
manager of the Heritage Lottery Fund. |
