CHRE looks at fitness-to-practise penalties
Consultation has started on bringing in a standardised set of penalties to be used by the nine health regulators that are supervised by the Council for Healthcare Regulatory Excellence (PJ, 3
November, p488).
Rosemary Macalister-Smith, head of policy research and external relations
at the CHRE, said: “The sanctions available to the nine regulators
of health professionals, as part of the fitness-to-practise procedures,
are central to their roles in protecting the public. We would like to
explore the possibility of increasing the level of consistency between
the sanctions available, and to identify the most appropriate range of
sanctions.”
Comments on removal and suspension from, and restoration to, professional
registers, as well as undertakings and conditions on practice, warnings
and reprimands, fines,
interim orders and registrants’ appeal rights can be sent to the
CHRE until 29 February, 2008.
The CHRE intends to issue a report of its conclusions to the UK health
departments, the regulators and the public in April next year (2008).
