Minister gives pharmacists green light to invest for future

Creating an environment that gives pharmacy businesses confidence to invest is important, Dawn Primarolo, the Government minister responsible for pharmacy in England, said at this week’s Royal Pharmaceutical Society Council dinner.

“We will help establish that environment so that the NHS fully utilises pharmacy in the delivery of a wide range of clinical services and you confidently invest and get to use the clinical skills you have trained to deliver,” the minister said.

“I expect the pharmacy White Paper to underpin this so that pharmacy is fully seen as one of the solutions to PCTs’ commissioning needs within the overall primary care and community services strategy.”

Ms Primarolo also said that she wants pharmacists to do more to reduce health inequalities.

“There is no doubt in my mind that pharmacy, particularly given its accessibility to the public, has a central role to play in the team helping to reduce health inequalities,” she said. “I can see a day when pharmacies become recognised by all as centres for health literacy and healthy living and the public sees pharmacists as one of their most valued community leaders.”

She concluded by saying that professional leadership was not a matter for the Government to determine.

“All I would like to say is that I hope this is delivered very soon,’ she said.
