Social care reform announced

A major reform of the adult social care system was announced this week by Health Secretary Alan Johnson.

The programme to transform care is set out in an agreement signed by six Government ministers as well as leaders from local government, social care and the NHS. A key element is the introduction of personal budgets.

An extra £520m will be allocated to councils over the next three years to support the redesign of services.
